Open Burning Questions or Complaints

What to Know Before You Burn

  • Keep attending the fire until it is completely burned out or extinguished
  • Ensure the space around the burn area is clear
  • Do not start a fire under overhead lines, overhanging trees, near fences or structures
  • Always have water and hand tools at the burn area to control the burn

Backyard Burning

You can only burn during Open Burning Seasons – call the daily burn information line before you burn.

Outdoor burning can be done in an outdoor fireplace, burn barrel, backyard incinerator or a burn pile.

You can burn yard debris: wood, needles, or leaves from plants grown and burned on the property of origin.

What You Cannot Burn

You cannot burn tires, plastics, decomposable garbage (organic material, paper), petroleum and petroleum-treated materials, asphalt and asphalt materials, chemicals (pesticides, cleaners, detergents), or any material that produces black or dense smoke.

Agricultural Burning

Agricultural burning is the burning of any agriculture waste generated by an agricultural operation that uses, or intends to use, land primarily for the purpose of obtaining a profit by raising, harvesting, and selling crops or raising or selling animals. You are not allowed to burn materials on the do not burn list. Demolition waste is also not considered agricultural waste even if it is from a farm structure. Agricultural burning is regulated by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. If you have a complaint about field burning, please call the Department of Agriculture at 503-986-4709.
